Stuart Brierley Integration Management - BizTalk and More

In a previous post I talked about a problem I encountered with thread startvation when using the WSE 2.0 Adapter.

I thought it would be a good idea if I actually put down some notes about this adapter and how it is installed.

Web Service Enhancements

Web Services Enhancements (WSE) is an add-on to the Microsoft .NET Framework.  It  includes a set of classes to implement additional WS-* Web service specifications specifically for areas such as security, reliable messaging, and sending attachments.

WSE provides extensions to the SOAP protocol,  allowing the definition of and use of custom security, reliable messaging, policies etc.  These capabilities can be added at either design time using code or at deployment time using a policy file.

During 2004, WSE 2.0 was released for Visual Studio .NET 2003 and the .NET Framework 1.1, introducing major secure communication improvements (such as the signing and encryption of user-defined SOAP headers, Kerberos Security Context Tokens, delegated trust), a new lightweight messaging infrastructure, a new programming model, support for SOAP based messaging over TCP as an alternative to HTTP, and a policy framework based on WS-Policy and WSDL, WS-Addressing, WS-Trust, WS-SecureConversation support.

BizTalk Adapter for Web Service Enhancements 2.0

The BizTalk Adapter for Web Services Enhancement (WSE) 2.0 allows for the integration of secure Web services within BizTalk Server 2004.  This adapter is implemented using the WSE 2.0 framework for Microsoft .NET, and supports WS-Security, WS-Trust, WS-SecureConversation, WS-SecurityPolicy, and WS-Policy.

The BizTalk WSE Adapter can be used for securely calling Web services and publishing BizTalk orchestrations as Web services
:

  • When calling Web services, the Adapter for WSE provides the means to add Web service type definitions to BizTalk Projects and the configuration of send ports for calling Web services.
  • When publishing BizTalk Web services, the Adapter for WSE provides a version of the BizTalk Web Services Publishing Wizard that creates Web services that utilizes the WSE 2.0 framework for Microsoft .NET.

The WSE Adapter takes advantage of the framework’s support of policy files,  allowing you to add or modify the security requirements without at run time.

Installing the Adapter

The BizTalk WSE 2.0 Adapter has one prerequisite – The Microsoft Web Services Enhancements 2.0 SP3 for .Net.  Download this and run the setup, ensuring that you then have the correct version of the Microsoft.Web.Services2 assembly in your GAC, it should be version 2.0.3.0.

Download and install the BizTalk Adapter for WSE 2.0, followed by it's associated Service Pack 1.

Following successful installation, you should have a working WSE Adapter.
