At http://www.sqlservercentral... I asked the question "Is prefixing table names with "tab" a good idea?" The general consensus amoung DBA at the best is that it is unnecessary. I also asked the question at http://forums.asp.net/t/157... there some point was seen to it by one contributor. The post at http://www.sqlservercentral... has a poll that will take input from non-members of the SQL Central forum. So, what ...

“At WPC today (12th July 2010), Bob Muglia announced an exciting new addition the Windows Azure platform, called the Windows Azure Platform Appliance. When the appliance is released for broader availability, it will allow partners and large customers to host their own dedicated versions of Windows Azure and SQL Azure. For developers, this means that your Windows Azure applications can be hosted on-premises, in a partner’s data center, or in the public cloud without change.” This is not a bundle of ...

This week, Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft’s Developer Division, announced, via blog post, the early Beta release of a new tool called WebMatrix. WebMatrix is a free developer tool that enables Web development geared toward what might I might call Markup-and-Script developers (more on that in a minute). And although WebMatrix draws upon technologies already, or soon to be, present in the fuller ASP.NET Web development platform and the Visual Studio integrated development environment ...

Microsoft has recently released the first beta version of WebMatrix. What is it? Taken from the WebMatrix official site: "WebMatrix is everything you need to build Web sites using Windows. It includes IIS Developer Express (a development Web server), ASP.NET (a Web framework), and SQL Server Compact (an embedded database). It streamlines Web site development and makes it easy to start Web sites from popular open-source apps. The skills and code you develop with WebMatrix transition seamlessly to ...
If you are receiving an error trying to connect to SQL Azure from Management Studio (SQL Server 2008 R2) and the error code indicates Error:53, most likely you are running into the following issue. The above error clearly indicates that the connection couldn’t be opened. One of my colleagues faced this issue and we were pretty ...

I already have Expression Blend 4 and VS2010 Pro, so I’m only going to take WebMatrix and a DB (MSSQL SRV 08 R2 Express and leave defaults for ...

Technorati Tags: .NET If you use Resharper, you've probably seen it recommend that you make private methods static if they don't use any instance data or methods. FxCop also has a rule (CA1822) about this: "Methods which do not access instance data or call instance methods can be marked as static. After doing so, the compiler will emit non-virtual call sites to these members which will prevent a check at runtime for each call that insures the current object pointer is non-null. This can result in ...

Hard to believe I haven't posted in a year. I really intended to make this place a priority but a new job and life changes took over. 5 Stored Procedures Optimization Tips 1. Use stored procedures instead of heavy-duty queries. This can reduce network traffic as your client will send to the server only the stored procedure name (perhaps with some parameters) instead of all the text from a large heavy-duty query. Stored procedures can be used to enhance security as well. For example, you can give the users permission to execute the stored procedure to work with restricted sets of columns and data. 2. Call stored procedures using ...
I was recently on a project that required me to move SharePoint content to SQL Database. As I searched the best way to do this, I thought of a timer job that would run nightly and move the data to SQL, a co-worker who is a SQL expert suggested I use SSIS to move the data over. I started searching online and came up with a couple of options the most notable being the technet article. The problem with the example on technet is that it uses a custom connector that connect one Document library or List ...
Some of the new Features in EF v4 are : context.ContextOptions.Lazy... is “true” by default. What this means is that if you access a Navigation Property (which returns either a EntityCollection or a EntityReference) of an Entity and if that Navigated Entity (or Entity collection) is not found in the ObjectContext then the ObjectContext automatically loads it when the NavigationProperty is accessed. This means additional round trip to the database for each Navigated entity. If you need ...
It seems like typed datasets provide the same type of object layout as the entity framework. What's the difference and why should I use one or the other? We'll start at the fundamental difference: DataSets give you a basic in-memory database that you can query and fill from a data source such as a database. Queries against datasets are executed against in-memory data. Entity Framework gives you a translation layer that translates LINQ queries to your database's SQL dialect. Queries against the EF ...
Cannot map the lookup column, 'ID', because the column data type is a binary large object block (BLOB) There is a possibility that you might get this error while working in SSIS and trying to do a lookup to a csv file. In this case your destination columns might be of type (BLOB) - Long Text / Ntext and you might face this error And I tried a lot to convert the data inside the lookup column to varchar but it was constantly throwing an error : I tried : select cast(ID as varchar) as ID from table1 ...
A couple of days ago I was playing around with Silverlight 4. Amazing platform, especially since they now support multi-touch events. But before you can run, you’ve got to learn how to walk, right? So, in order to learn some of the new capabilities of the platform I decided to make an application to keep track of all my contacts. I know, there are numerous applications out there that can peform that task much better, but I didn’t want to create a usefull program, I just wanted to have a ‘real’ project ...

I was recently working on a BizTalk 2004 project where I encountered an issue with capturing exceptions (inside my orchestration) occurring from an external source. Like many others signed up to the Windows Azure Platform, I received an email overnight detailing the upcoming database size changes for SQL Azure. I know from our work with early adopters over the last 12 months that the 1GB and 10GB limits were sometimes seen as blockers, especially when migrating existing application to SQL Azure. On June 28th 2010, we will be increasing the size limits: SQL Azure Web Edition database from 1 GB to 5 GB SQL Azure Business Edition database will go from 10 GB to ...
With Dynamic SQL, one stored proc can do the work of many... Over the years, I have worked with a variety of different clients. It seems that every client has unique and different needs. In some situations, you may find that dynamic sql fills the void better than other solutions available to you. One scenario I have encountered in the past is one where the client wants the capability to run aggregate information at run time, but for any start month and number of time periods. There are many ways ...
I have an Oracle background. It was interesting to see how rollback handled in Oracle and SQL Server. There is no begin trans in Oracle. What oracle does is it will store the data in a temporary area called the rollback segments. Untill your issue the commit command the records will be kept there. You can even rollback your update statement by issuing the rollback command. When you issue the commit command the records in the rollback segments are written to the redo log files. The same logic for ...

The Report Viewer control requires that session state be enabled in local mode I never came across that error before when using RSWebaprts in Sharepoint 2007:) But i think is related to ASP.NET sessions state:( Any to fix it you would have to start to make sure the SharePoint Server ASP.NET Session State Service is enabled. A few months ago, I found myself working with a repetitive cursor that looped until the data had been manipulated enough times that it was finally correct. The cursor was heavily dependent upon dates, every time requiring the earlier of two (or several) dates in one stored procedure, while requiring the later of two dates in another stored procedure. In short what I needed was a function that would allow me to perform the following evaluation: WHERE MAX(Date1, Date2) < @SomeDate The problem is, ...

When you’ve just gone through a setup of AppFabric and you’ve got some WF/WCF things happening, if you start looking at the Dashboard and you see nothing, it might be as simple as restarting SQL Agent. Much data is unstructured, such as text documents, images, and videos. This unstructured data is often stored outside the database, separate from its structured data. This separation can cause data management complexities. Or, if the data is associated with structured storage, the file streaming capabilities and performance can be limited. FILESTREAM integrates the SQL Server Database Engine with an NTFS file system by storing varbinary(max) binary large object (BLOB) data as files on the file system. ...
