SSAS: Office 2007 - breaks the calculation tab in BIDS

This probably does not apply to many people yet, but If you have installed the RTM of Office 2007 and don't yet have SP2 of SQL 2005 installed, then your calculation tab in the cube designer is probably broken.

This issue may manifest itself in other ways too, its just that I knew this had been an issue during the beta cycle of office thanks to Reed at the Hitachi Consulting blog. There are details here http://sqlug.be/forums/339/ShowThread.aspx#339 on how to fix this issue.

Basically it looks like the Office 2007 install put the SP2 versions of msmdlocal.dll and msmgdsrv.dll into the %Program Files%\Common Files\System\Ole DB folder.

Your choices are to either upgrade to SP2 (which is still only in CTP at the moment) or to replace the two affected files with a copy from somewhere like %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE.

Upgrading to SP2 is probably the way to go once SP2 has been released. For the short term I have gone down the "copy dlls" path, but be warned, you do this at your own risk.

[Update 19 Nov 2006] Mosha pointed out in a comment that there is actually an official hotfix out for this issue http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/926421  and that this is also documented in the Excel readme file.

I just wanted to point out, that this very issue was documented in the Office 2007 ReadMe file, and also in the KB article - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/926421. Too bad nobody reads ReadMe file.

I don't think "you should have read the readme" is a good excuse for this kind of bug.

@mex - if you are on 2008 SP1 then re-installing the service pack should fix this or you should be able to find the correct versions of these dlls in %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE.

People that leave help like: "Read the read me file of a program that does not even related to this program." Need to jump off a cliff. Seriously if your entire purpose in IT is to not help people on what libraries are missing to make programs work but say: "This is a known issue, it's in books online, it is in the read me." Go jump off a cliff or switch industries. Things always break in IT, it's the community of helpful people that quickly fix things. Oh and this issue seems to be an issue with me when I installed VS 2010 and then realized that BIDS does not work without VS 2008 because they are one to one SQL 2005 you need BIDS add on VS 2005, same with 2008. I know, I should have read the read me file of every program I ever installed fully and spent more time reading read me files than coding. I think when you get into coding that is all you should do, just memorize books online and read me files. </sarcasm>
