The Life and Times of a Dev Yes, we're really that weird

So this is way off topic for my normal posts, but I thought I’d share this experience so that hopefully it’ll save others some pain.

Many states have required the spill proof gas cans because they’re supposed to be better for the environment, blah, blah, blah.  However, they can also be extremely dangerous.

Many of these cans no longer vent like the old cans did.  So if the can is in a warm location, considerable pressure can be built up.  This can cause the gas to be discharged from the can in an explosive manner.  Basically, the contents can be under pressure.  Old gas cans rarely had that problem.

So why did all this come up?

I was stupid!  I thought – yeah, there could be some pressure there, but still didn’t release it before I started attempting to fill a portable generator.  I pushed the button, and gas was expelled forcibly toward the tank of the generator.  Enough force that a spray of gasoline coated my face, eyes, and torso.  The generator had been running, and I’m very fortunate that the hot exhaust didn’t ignite the vapors.  At this point I don’t know if I’ll have eye damage, but I’m not happy with the government of California (where the new designs were forced into place).  In the name of “protecting the environment” they made a product with a long history of safety into something that is dangerous.

So, the take away from this story?  VENT THE CAN BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FILL!  It’ll defeat the whole purpose of the no spill can, but it might save your eye, or your life.
